Here's your guide to environmental buzzwords and their meaning.
It's not always easy to keep up with expressions and concepts when speaking of climate change and the environment. Therefore, we’re presenting a new buzzword each week with the aim of simplifying scientist talk. Last week we wrote about the Anthropocene as the new geological epoch. Next up is biodiversity.
Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is: «The variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable».
Why is it important to us? Because biological diversity plays a crucial role in the ecosystems ability to cope with change and disturbances. It basically spreads the risk, and increases the resilience of the ecosystem, which is the buzzword for next weeks article.
