Led by maritime industry leaders, DNV and Astrup Fearnley and held at one of the world’s most anticipated maritime events, Nor-Shipping, the hackathon invited participants to look into how data-driven decision making can help the maritime industry reduce harmful emissions to air.
There is a growing demand for new technologies that can help the maritime industry help meet shipping decarbonisation targets. Between 80-90% of the world’s trade is carried by sea. While ships are considered the most energy-efficient way of moving these goods, the sheer magnitude of maritime transport also means that it has a significant impact on global emissions. If left unchecked and unregulated, shipping could account for over 20% of global CO2 emissions by 2050. There is therefore an expectation on the industry to reduce its’ carbon intensity by at least 40% by 2030, pursuing efforts towards 70% by 2050, compared to 2008.
As part of the search for a solution, DNV and Astrup Fearnley invited students, researchers, early-stage entrepreneurs and established enterprises to participate and to be part of a two-day long hackathon during Nor-Shipping (April 5-6), in Oslo Norway.
Here, the participants got exclusive access to the Emissions Prediction Calculator API, a tool developed by DNV and Astrup Fearnley for the maritime industry, as well detailed data on ships, voyages and more. Utilizing these resources, CHOOOSE presented a concrete solution to the shipping industry to be used for decision-making and lead to more sustainable shipping through seamless high-impact climate compensation solutions. The final participants in the final included Segal, Iserv and code, where CHOOOSE was awarded as the winner of the DNV Hackathon 2022.
