Carbon offsetting is a robust, immediate and measurable way to take responsibility for our current carbon footprint today whilst building infrastructure for a journey to a net-zero society. But what is carbon offsetting, and how does it work?
According to the scientists, we need to reduce emissions by more than 50 percentage by 2030 if we stand any chance of meeting the Paris target of limiting climate warming to 1.5 degrees. This figure is equivalent to reducing the current emissions of the United States, China, India, the EU and combined.
To meet this target, we need to use every tool available in the box – and both individuals, companies, and governments need to take action now and have longer-term plans to reach net-zero within the near future.
Carbon offsetting is a robust, immediate and measurable way to take responsibility for our current carbon footprint today whilst building infrastructure for a journey to a net-zero society. Yet, many are still reluctant to offset their carbon emissions. Why? Mainly because of the many misconceptions that are out there around offsetting.
Carbon offsetting is not a silver bullet for tackling climate change alone. But when done right, it is an essential part of an effective way to reduce global emissions. Also, regardless of how much CO2 we manage to downsize, we will still be left with an unavoidable carbon footprint simply by existing, and this carbon footprint should be addressed.
But what exactly is carbon offsetting, and how does it work?
This video explains the basic principles of carbon offsetting, and how you and I as individuals or as a company can help contribute to reduce global emissions and support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
