Empowering Microsoft suppliers to take climate action with sustainable aviation fuel

As part of its broader climate strategy, Microsoft has launched a first-of-its-kind program to simplify access to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for its suppliers — empowering them to address related aviation emissions in a measurable, credible way. We at Chooose are proud to provide the software to make this initiative possible and to support Microsoft’s commitment to driving decarbonization across its value chain.

Via the Chooose portal, Microsoft suppliers can now estimate their aviation-related emissions and purchase SAF environmental attributes directly via a platform — simplifying the use and scaling of SAF.

Driving emissions reductions across the value chain

This initiative was designed for Microsoft and its suppliers to meet three key goals:

  1. Simplify decarbonization action: Provide Microsoft’s suppliers with a simple, credible way to purchase SAF scope 3 environmental attributes and meet Microsoft’s Supplier Code of Conduct emission reduction goals.
  2. Align with Microsoft’s sustainability standards: Ensure SAF supply and transactions meet Microsoft’s sourcing, reporting, and verification criteria.
  3. Strengthen value chain collaboration on climate initiatives: Create new pathways for engagement across Microsoft’s value chain, helping suppliers align with and contribute to shared sustainability goals.

“Reducing scope 3 emissions is a shared challenge that requires partnership across our entire value chain,” says Julia Fidler, Environmental Sustainability, Fuel and Materials Decarbonization Lead at Microsoft. “By collaborating with Chooose, we’re helping our suppliers access the tools and solutions they need to support sustainable aviation fuel, reduce aviation emissions, and contribute to collective climate progress.”

A streamlined path for SAF access and emissions tracking

Given the complexity of scope 3 decarbonization, suppliers like Microsoft’s often face barriers to taking climate action. Through the Chooose platform, Microsoft suppliers can:

  • Upload flight activity to generate emissions estimates and track emissions over time
  • Purchase SAF environmental attribute certificates with documentation to align with reporting
  • Access real-time analytics, program metrics, and configurable reports to support internal tracking and help streamline third-party audits
  • Complete simple, flexible transactions — regardless of purchase size

The SAF in this program is sourced from Phillips 66, delivered to London Heathrow, and allocated to Microsoft’s program through IAG (British Airways’ parent company). As physical SAF moves along the value chain, Chooose software helps to maintain chain of custody of environmental attributes and to promote transparency and integrity in SAF transactions while streamlining engagement between Microsoft and its suppliers, and between airlines (the SAF attribute sellers) and customers.

Our software is designed to enable and scale climate action. The software for this program is customizable, with the ability to support multiple SAF supply sources and future program expansion.

Looking ahead

This program is a major step forward in enabling value chain climate engagement for difficult-to-abate emissions, like in the aviation sector. Chooose and Microsoft are demonstrating how software and value chain participation can contribute toward broader decarbonization efforts.

Microsoft suppliers interested in participating can sign up via the dedicated website. Together, we can help reduce aviation emissions on a global scale.
