Chooose joins the First Movers Coalition
Chooose is proud to join the First Movers Coalition (FMC), an influential global alliance dedicated to decarbonizing the toughest sectors of the economy. By accelerating innovative clean energy technologies, FMC aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Launched at COP26, the First Movers Coalition is a partnership between the World Economic Forum and the US Department of State, supported by the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry. Collaborating with the US Departments of Commerce and Energy, FMC unites businesses worldwide to leverage their purchasing power, creating a strong demand for the emerging technologies vital for a transition to net-zero.
Targeting high-emission sectors
FMC focuses on heavy industries and transportation sectors — aluminum, aviation, chemicals, cement/concrete, shipping, steel, and trucking — that account for 30% of global emissions. Transitioning these high-polluting industries to low-carbon technologies is essential for meeting climate goals, despite the high costs and limited incentives.
“First Movers Coalition companies are paving the way for the decarbonization of our industries through disruptive innovations across the hardest-to-abate sectors. We are thrilled to welcome Chooose as a member of the First Movers Coalition, and we look forward to their engagement to accelerate the commercialization of innovative technologies that drive decarbonizing the aviation sector by scaling the demand and adoption of sustainable aviation fuel," says Nancy Gillis, Program Head of the First Movers Coalition at World Economic Forum.
The challenge of decarbonizing aviation
Aviation contributes roughly 2% of global CO2 emissions and is a particularly challenging sector to decarbonize, with demand for air travel expected to surge through 2030. Without additional measures, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) projects that CO2 emissions from international aviation could increase by 2-4x by 2050, compared to 2015 levels.
One of the most promising levers for action int he short-term is the adoption and scaling of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). SAF has the potential tor educe the lifecycle carbon emissions of flying by up to 80% (with the exact reduction in carbon intensity depending on the feedstock and processing type). However, today, SAF only represents 0.1% of global jet fuel, and so to achieve aviation's climate objectives, there is an urgent need to scale SAF's production and distribution.
Accomplishing this goal requires increased investment, policy changes, technological innovation, and corporate and consumer action. The First Movers Coalition aims to bring cutting-edge technologies to commercial scale within the next decade by generating early market demand. With $12 billion committed to purchasing “green technologies,” FMC is poised to make concrete strides towards climate targets.
Our commitment to sustainable aviation fuel
As a member of the First Movers Coalition, Chooose is committed to helping hard-to-decarbonize industries such as aviation, travel, and logistics, take meaningful climate action by providing the tools to understand carbon footprints and accelerate the adoption of climate solutions — in particular, SAF. By working closely with our partners and fellow FMC partners, we can help demonstrate SAF demand and increase its accessibility.
“Chooose is proud to join the First Movers Coalition to send a firm market demand for emerging technologies essential for a net-zero transition. We look forward to fulfilling our commitment to the aviation industry and contributing on a larger scale to closing the multi-gigaton gap between climate intention and climate action,” says Chooose CEO Andreas Slettvoll.
Building the future of sustainable and profitable value chains
FMC enables members to take impactful climate action and presents a unique opportunity to build the sustainable value chains of the future. Join us in this critical mission to decarbonize the most challenging sectors and reach decarbonization.
“The First Movers Coalition believes that reducing emissions to net-zero by 2050 is possible if the right technologies are brought to commercial scale within the next decade, and members like Chooose are crucial to champion this mission to enact the change we need”, adds Gillis.
About The First Movers Coalition
The First Movers Coalition advances the most critical, emerging climate technologies by leveraging members' collective purchasing power. By translating member commitments into the world’s largest, credible demand signal, the FMC accelerates the adoption of emerging climate technologies to decarbonize the world's heavy-emitting sectors.
