Air New Zealand expands its carbon reporting program with corporate and cargo emissions platforms
Air New Zealand is enhancing its carbon reporting capabilities by launching two new emissions platforms. These platforms, developed in partnership with climate tech company Chooose, will help carbon-conscious corporate and cargo customers better understand their emissions. With a growing emphasis on sustainability initiatives in the region, there’s an increasing demand for tools that measure, understand, and address carbon emissions from air travel and freight.
Expanding carbon reporting beyond individual consumers
Building on the success of Air New Zealand’s Voluntary Emissions Contribution Program, the airline is now extending its focus beyond individual consumers to include corporate flyers and companies using its cargo services. This collaboration provides clear and accessible emissions data to a broader customer base, offering greater visibility into the carbon impact of flying.
Advanced digital solutions
Leveraging Chooose software, both individual and corporate flyers can access detailed emissions estimates by route and seat class, where applicable. This data empowers customers to make more informed decisions about their carbon impact as well as to voluntarily support certified carbon projects around the world.
Customized corporate portals
Organizations using Air New Zealand for staff travel or cargo shipments will benefit from a dedicated company portal. This portal offers monthly emissions estimates, trend analysis, and the ability to track the cumulative impact of supported carbon projects. This feature allows businesses to better understand and manage their unique carbon footprints.
“As an airline, the biggest risk to our business is climate change, and we are acutely aware of the need to reduce carbon emissions while still connecting Aotearoa (New Zealand) to the world,” Air New Zealand Chief Sustainability Officer, Kiri Hannifin, says. “Increasingly, carbon reduction is something our corporate and cargo customers are focused on too, whether that’s motivated by their own strategy, mandatory reporting needs, or because their own customers expect it.
“Scope 3 emissions, which include emissions from staff travel or freight, are often a large source of emissions for businesses and they can be hard to understand. Our new emissions platforms will help these customers better understand the make-up of their emissions profile, as well as provide the option to purchase carbon credits from certified projects,” Hannifin concludes.
Andreas Slettvoll, CEO at Chooose says, “As the first airline in Asia-Pacific to launch a cargo carbon program with Chooose, we are proud to work with such an agile partner to make climate action more accessible across it customer base. At Chooose, we’ve long said that if we want to ‘bend the curve’ on emissions, we must take action across all sectors today. Emissions are increasing, despite individuals and corporations stating a willingness to pay for more sustainable options — that’s why we’re delighted to champion Air New Zealand’s efforts to provide their customers with the ability to better estimate their emissions and to support much needed carbon projects.”
