Southwest Airlines has announced the launch of a new, innovative option for eligible corporate customers looking to support sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via a partnership with climate tech company CHOOOSE™.

SAF is fuel produced from non-fossil fuel sources that can result in lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions than conventional jet fuel. Today, SAF is produced in limited volumes and comes at a significant price premium over conventional jet fuel, making it difficult for airlines to incorporate in substantial volumes into their operations. There is still work to be done for the industry to scale SAF, but through the partnership with CHOOOSE, Southwest can offer opportunities to eligible corporate customers to support the airline’s use of SAF.

In October 2021, Southwest launched the SAF Beta Program, enabling eligible business customers to purchase SAF claims associated with SAF use in the airline's operations. Now, eligible customers can buy these SAF claims and carbon offsets directly through Southwest Business Assist™. The CHOOOSE-powered tool from Southwest Airlines offers customizable self-service purchases based on corporate customers' individual priorities, budgets, and strategies.

The platform allows for the purchase of carbon offsets alongside or independent of Customer SAF Claims. Credible climate projects also play an important role in reducing or removing carbon as in-sector technologies develop.

As part of their ongoing efforts to achieve sustainability targets, Southwest Airlines has given individual and corporate customers the chance to offset their carbon emissions directly when making bookings since early 2022. Moreover, they've been encouraging environmental action by matching contributions and rewarding customers with loyalty points.

“We are committed to supporting our corporate Customers in their decarbonization efforts, no matter where they are in the journey. That means providing options to address the carbon emissions of business travel,” said Helen Giles, Managing Director Environmental Sustainability at Southwest Airlines. “We're proud to partner with CHOOOSE on launching a feature in Southwest Business Assist that allows corporate Customers to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) claims. We know how important SAF is to our valued corporate Customers, and we are thrilled to be able to expand access!,” added Giles.
