  • Finnair Cargo invites its customers to better understand their estimated shipment emissions, and address them using a service that combines the support of sustainable aviation fuel and trusted climate projects.

Through the service, a platform powered by CHOOOSE, Finnair Cargo’s customers can estimate and understand their flight’s CO2 emissions and seamlessly address their journey by choosing a mix of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and certified climate projects. The pricing varies depending on how the contribution is shared between the two. In the first phase, the service is available with a credit card payment and offers an easy solution for freight forwarders to share the climate program link with cargo shippers interested in more sustainable operations. The service is intended for managing the estimated CO2 emissions associated with individual or a small number of shipments. Customers wishing to address a bigger volume of shipments can contact Finnair Cargo via this form.

“We want to offer our customers a simple and transparent way to act on the climate impacts of their shipments,” says Milla Nyholm, Marketing and Sustainability Lead, Finnair Cargo. “This service is the first step in launching our sustainability-related offering for cargo customers, and it combines two important tools, climate projects and SAF, which both are needed to reach carbon neutrality in aviation.”

The high price and limited availability of sustainable aviation fuel still presents challenges in scaling its use across commercial aviation. Thus, stimulating demand and supply is important to drive down the price of SAF and increase its availability. Meanwhile, the support of certified climate projects continue to play a contributing part in reaching decarbonization in aviation, and trustworthy projects with concrete and verifiable emissions removals are needed.

“CHOOOSE is proud to support Finnair in enabling their cargo customers to understand, track and address their estimated carbon footprints. Together, we are driving positive change and accelerating the support of climate solutions like sustainable aviation fuel and carbon removal projects — a much-needed step in the journey towards decarbonizing the aviation sector”, says CHOOOSE founder and CEO, Andreas Slettvoll.

Finnair aims to halve the emissions by the end of 2025 and reach net zero by the end of 2045, working systematically towards these targets. The toolkit for achieving the CO2 targets focuses on reducing own emissions through aircraft weight reduction, fuel-efficient flying and the use of key climate solutions, such as SAF.

The service is now available at https://finnaircargo.chooose.today/. Cargo customers can also book a sustainability meeting with Finnair Cargo for further information or to discuss their sustainability needs in more detail.
